Seniors Julie Walroth and Megan Spurlock received Missouri Valley recognition for their academic achievements this week. Walroth was voted to the first team of the MVC Scholar-Athlete team by the league's sports information directors. Spurlock received honorable mention for the first time in her career.

Walroth, a sociology major, is the first player to make the scholar-athlete first team for Evansville since 2001.  The recognition comes on the heels of Walroth being voted to the ESPN The Magazine All-Academic District team. The Cincinnati, Ohio native is now the new MVC and UE record holder for career digs with 2,095. With 656 digs this season, Walroth broke her own UE record of 651 digs in 2006. The three time 2007 MVC Defensive Player of the Week finished the regular season fourth in the NCAA in digs and is only one of 25 players in NCAA history to have 2,000 digs for their career.

Spurlock is a social studies education major from New Castle, Indiana. She led the team this season with 278 kills and was second to Walroth with 217 digs. Spurlock finished her career in eighth place in UE history with 249 career block assists and ranks in the top ten in career attack percentage and total blocks.

To be eligible for a scholar-athlete, the student must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.00 cumulative gpa (on a 4.00 scale). They must also have participated in at least 75 percent of the regular-season matches. Student-athletes must be of at least sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
