EVANSVILLE, IN. – The University of Evansville's
Abby Smith of swimming & diving, was honored by the Missouri Valley Conference yesterday at the MVC Championships. Smith was just the third athlete in Evansville history to be honored with the prestigious award.
Smith showed that she had what it takes in the classroom and in the pool, after being the second swimmer in school history to win the award. Christina Schmidgall was the other swimmer honored with the award.
Abby was a huge part of the Aces success this season, especially this past weekend. Smith was a part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that finished first, along with
Michelle Tipton,
Danielle Freeman and
Sam Montgomery. She finished in eight place in the 50-yard freestyle and was also part of the 800-yard freestyle relay that finished in fourth place and the same four girls were a part of the 400-yard freestyle relay that finished in second place, breaking a school record in the meantime.
Smith had a 4.0 GPA during the 2013 Fall Semester and currently has a Cumulative GPA of 3.932. Her major is Professional Chemistry.
Smith wasn't the only swimmer to be honored by the MVC during the final day of championships, juniors Michelle Tipton, Mackenzie Powell and Sam Montgomery and freshman Danielle Freeman were all named to the MVC All-Conference Team alongside Smith. Freshman diver
Alex Hart was also honored by the MVC, being named to the MVC Honorable-Mention team.
