BOX SCORE
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville baseball team notched its third shutout of the season by defeating cross-town rival Southern Indiana, 4-0, Wednesday night at Braun Stadium in the eighth “Battle at the Braun”.
Junior left-hander
Cole Isom led Evansville (17-29) by tossing 6.0 scoreless innings to improve his record to 3-5 on the season. Isom scattered five hits and fanned six Southern Indiana (29-16) hitters without issuing a walk.
Senior
Jason Hockemeyer and freshman
Shain Showers led the Aces offensively, as they each finished 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Freshman
Jonathan Ramon drove in UE’s other run, going 1-for-3 with an RBI double.
Evansville’s bullpen combined for four strikeouts and allowed just one hit over the final 3.0 innings without walking a batter.
The Aces took advantage of a pair of walks and a wild pitch in the bottom of the first to grab an early 2-0 lead. Redshirt sophomore
Kevin Kaczmarski coaxed a leadoff walk to start the inning, moved into scoring position on a ground out by senior
Chris Pearson and scored on Hockemeyer’s double into the gap in left center. Hockemeyer was able to tag and advance to third on a deep fly ball from redshirt sophomore
Kyle Pollock and scampered home on a wild pitch out of the hand of Screaming Eagles starter Craig Austin.
UE doubled its lead in the bottom of the six, when Ramon drove in Hockemeyer with a double off the top of the left field wall and Showers plated Ramon with a hard ground ball up the middle that found its way into the outfield to give Evansville a 4-0 advantage.
USI’s best chance to crack the scoreboard came in its half of the seventh, when Reece Rounder and Brent Weinzapfel led off the frame with back-to-back singles that brought freshman
Brent Jurceka out of the bullpen to replace Isom. Jurceka was able to get a pair of ground outs and a strikeout to keep Rounder and Weinzapfel stranded at the corners.
Hamilton Carr led Southern Indiana at the plate by going 3-for-4, while Rounder finished the night with a 2-for-4 effort.
The Aces will north head up Highway 41 this weekend, when they jump back into Missouri Valley Conference play for a three-game set with Indiana State at Bob Warn Field in Terre Haute, Ind. UE will open the series with the Sycamores Friday at 5:30 p.m.
