Evansville's crisp offense set the tone Friday night in the Purple Aces' 9-0 win over Alabama A&M in the opening round of the 23rd ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic at McCutchan Stadium. Those are the most goals by UE since a 9-0 win at Lipscomb in 2007.
East Tennessee State edged Bradley 2-1 in the first match, setting up a Sunday championship match at 2:30 between the 2-1 Buccaneers and the 2-1 Purple Aces. Bradley will play Alabama A&M in the 12 noon opener.
Mike Luttrull missed the school record for points in a match by just two, scoring three goals and making one assist for seven points. The senior forward scored goals at 14:43, 16:20 and 24:12, making it 4-0 following Tad Kreamalmeyer's goal that started off the scoring at 5:45. Luttrull made the assist on Evansville's first goal, stealing the ball from a defender and feeding Kreamalmeyer for the score.
Freshmen Philip Manga and Joel Nash got into the scoring column for the first time in their collegiate careers later in the first half to make it 6-0 at the break, and Gavin Chura, Blake Schneider and Trevor Schmidt scored second half goals.
Evansville finished with a 22-4 shot advantage, and put 14 of the 22 on goal while keeping the Bulldogs to no shots on goal. Veteran Phil Boerger and backup Robert Randant each played 45 minutes in goal.
