FT. WAYNE, Ind. -- Indiana's second largest city becomes the national focal point for collegiate soccer this weekend as the ShindigZ National Soccer Festival wraps up with 13 matches, including the University of Evansville taking on the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday at 6:10 CDT in the Aces' final exhibition match.
Other matches Saturday include Penn State vs. Louisville and Ohio State vs. Notre Dame. The event comes to an end Sunday with four matches: Michigan State vs. Duke, Indiana vs. Denver, Northwestern vs. Butler and IPFW vs. Notre Dame.
The Aces are 1-0-1 in friendlies following a 1-1 draw at Saint Louis and a 2-1 win at home Monday over Cincinnati.
"We have had two good tests already in pre-season with Saint Louis and Cincinnati, and we expect Michigan to offer us stiff competition as well," said Coach Mike Jacobs. "The festival in Fort Wayne has grown significantly over the past several years, and we are excited to once again be included in this outstanding field of teams.
"We learned a lot about ourselves against Cincinnati. They were a physical, direct team that put us under a lot of pressure at times. They also played with a commitment level that mirrored what we expect from a typical Missouri Valley Conference match. It was a good learning experience for our young team (starting two freshmen in midfield against UC), and the freshmen who played extensive minutes for us received a baptism under fire."
Michigan returns four of its top six scorers and veteran keeper Chris Blais from a squad that finished 10-7-1 overall and 2-4-0 in the Big 10 in 2009. Following the Michigan match, the Aces get ready for the regular season opener at the Nike Invitational at Portland, Ore., where they face the Washington Huskies Sept. 3 and nationally ranked Portland on Sept. 5.
