• 2010 ABCA All-Midwest Region Teams
Following one of the most productive offensive seasons in University of Evansville baseball history this spring, junior outfielder
Greg Wallace (Nanaimo, British Columbia/Dover Bay S.S.) has been named to the America Baseball Coaches Association’s All-Midwest Region second team in a vote of the region’s head coaches. The ABCA’s Midwest Region includes 34 schools from such conferences as the Missouri Valley Conference, the Big XII, and the Mountain West Conference.
Wallace was one of four Missouri Valley Conference players to earn ABCA All-Region honors in a region dominated by NCAA Tournament participants Texas (six players) and TCU (four players). Wallace is the first UE player to earn all-region honors since former pitcher Kai Tuomi earned second team honors in 2007. Overall, Wallace is the 18th Purple Ace to earn All-Midwest Region honors.
“This is a tremendous honor for Greg, especially when you consider some of the teams and players in our region,” said UE head coach
Wes Carroll. “When you consider the fact that 10 teams from our region advanced on to the NCAA Tournament, including two teams advancing to the College World Series, it is a tremendous honor for Greg to be recognized as one of the top six outfielders in our region.
“Greg really emerged as a driving force for our offense this year. He had one of the best seasons on record at UE, and when you look at everything that he was able to accomplish this year, it really comes as no surprise that he has earned all-region honors this spring. He is very deserving of this honor.”
Wallace earned second team all-region honors after a record-breaking season in which he rewrote three offensive records at UE and one Missouri Valley Conference record at the plate. Wallace tied former Major League great Joe Carter’s single-season MVC record for triples with a school-record 13, the fourth-highest single-season total in NCAA Division I history. Wallace also broke UE single-season records for both hits (91) and RBI (75), while hitting a team-best .371. Wallace earned first team all-MVC and MVC All-Tournament Team honors for UE, while ranking among the Valley’s leaders in batting average (4th-.371), slugging percentage (2nd-.678), runs scored (5th-55), hits (1st-91), RBI (1st-75), doubles (2nd-22), triples (1st-13), home runs (10th-nine), and total bases (1st-166).
Wallace will be one of 22 letterwinners, including seven position starters, who are scheduled to return for head coach Wes Carroll’s Purple Aces in the spring of 2011.
