University of Evansville senior outfielder
Alex Acheson (Champaign, Ill./Champaign Central) has been named this week’s Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week by the conference office after hitting .455 in UE’s first weekend of competition.
Acheson went 5-for-11 with a double, two runs batted in and three runs scored in the Purple Aces’ season-opening three-game series at Belmont this past weekend. A former honorable mention MVC Scholar-Athlete selection in 2008, Acheson hit safely and scored at least one run in all three games for the Purple Aces, while finishing the series with back-to-back two-hit efforts. His .455 batting average is currently tied with junior infielder
Cody Fick for the second-highest mark on the squad.
In the classroom, Acheson owns a 3.49 cumulative grade-point average in accounting at UE. To qualify for Prairie Farms/MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors, a student-athlete must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Acheson and the Purple Aces (0-3) will return to the diamond this weekend, as UE will travel south to Macon, Georgia to battle the Mercer Bears in a four-game series. The series is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. central time on Friday afternoon and continue with a Saturday doubleheader and a single-game Sunday, both slated to begin at noon.
