CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of Evansville went east to find its offense, and the Aces found plenty Friday evening in a 3-0 win over 2008 NCAA Sweet 16 team UNC Greensboro in the first round of the Carolina Nike Classic. The Aces take on #1 ranked (Soccer America) North Carolina Sunday in the final round at 2:30 cdt.
Sophomore
Tad Kreamalmeyer produced the second two-goal game of his career, putting the Aces ahead 1-0 at 22:28 and adding the second goal at 34:31. The first was set up by
Mike Luttrull and
Richard Menjivar, and the second came on a header following
Blake Schneider's corner kick. Luttrull added the third goal at 67:19, thanks to assists from Kreamalmeyer and
Tom Irvin.
Evansville (1-1) took a total of 13 shots compared to 12 by the Spartans (0-1). Both teams put six shots on goal, but UE sophomore keeper
Phil Boerger turned away all of them to pick up his second career shutout.
"Phil played extremely well for us, and so did Tad and Justin Sass among others," Jacobs said. "After not scoring against Michigan State and Edwardsville, it was nice to come out early and score two goals. That took a little pressure off us."
Sunday's match against the top ranked Tar Heels will be Evansville's first against a #1 ranked team since the Aces played Indiana in 2004.
"We're excited about the opportunity to play one of the top teams in the nation," Jacobs said about Sunday's match. "We have a lot of respect for North Carolina. They're a great team, but our guys are looking forward to the challenge."
