Keeping up the pressure finally paid off for the University of Evansville men's soccer team Friday night. The Purple Aces dominated IUPUI, but couldn't break a scoreless tie until the 80th minute, when Tad Kreamalmeyer served up a perfect cross from the left side that Mike Luttrull deposited near the far post into the back of the net.
The single tally was enough to give the Aces their third straight victory and send them into Sunday's final round of the 22nd ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic with a 4-2 record. UE plays Stony Brook at 2:30, following Sunday's opening match at 12:00 between Eastern Illinois and IUPUI. EIU beat Stony Brook 2-0 in Friday's first round opener.
Luttrull's goal was his third of the year, and Kreamalmeyer's assist was his third. They and junior forward Tom Irvin share the team lead in scoring with seven points each.
Evansville outshot the 1-4-1 Jaguars 23-4, although the shots on goal margin was much closer at 4-3. Sophomore goalkeeper Phil Boerger made three saves and picked up his third shutout victory of the season.
The Aces will be going after their second consecutive ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic championship, and their second tournament title in two weeks. They won the Bradley Soccer Classic last Saturday. Evansville has won six Aces Soccer Classic championships in the 22-year history of the event.
