Aces Grab Win, Two Losses Over Weekend

10/6/2009 9:34:50 AM

The University of Evansville softball team concluded weekend two of its fall schedule with an 11-1 win over Missouri-St. Louis and two losses to Chattanooga State Community College by scores of 7-6 and 3-0.

“I was again happy with our defensive effort as a whole on the day,” said Evansville head coach Mark Redburn. “We got off to a good start, as we were able to hit the ball well in game 1. In game two, I was happy to see the effort of our players going into the bottom of the seventh as we were down 7-2. It would have been easy to just quit and roll over, but Kelci Alsip got us started with a double, and we continued to fight back. With the bases loaded and two outs, the rally came to an end, and we fell just short of tying or winning the game. I was happy to see that the team wanted to still compete and not just quit.

“In game three, Jennifer McKee was pitching really well,” Redburn said. “We made a mistake to a good hitter, and she made us pay. One swing of the bat and just like that it was 3-0, but again we stopped it right there and did not allow it to continue on. Overall, it was a long day for our players, but they hung in there. They continue to learn a new style of play and each and every day they get better. I know we will be a better program and team for it later this spring.”

The Purple Aces have one more weekend at James and Dorothy Cooper Stadium this fall. On Saturday, UE faces Oakland City at noon and Lincoln Trail Community College at 2:00 p.m.
