NORMAL, Ill. -- Illinois State extended its win streak in women's soccer to seven on Sunday with a 4-0 win over the University of Evansville in a match that brought together the teams that tied for the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title in 2008.
The first place Redbirds (9-5-1, 4-0) struck twice in the first 12 minutes, with Jessica Carlson scoring in the eighth minute and Rachel Bostick following at 12:47 to take a quick 2-0 lead. They added a pair early in the second half. Alyssa Schulz scored in the 48th minute and Erin Egolf added Illinois State's fourth goal 12 minutes later. Illinois State has used a powerful offense to win seven in a row, outscoring opponents 28-6 during that stretch. The Redbirds outshot the Aces 20-4, and had 12 shots on goal compared to two by UE. Dani Langness and Katelyn Smith were the only Evansville players to put shots on goal against Illinois State goalkeeper Sasha Reiber.
After winning three in a row, Evansville (5-9-0, 2-3) has lost three straight to fall into sixth place in the MVC standings. UE has only one conference match remaining, on October 29 at home against Creighton. The top two finishers in the regular season receive first round byes in the State Farm MVC Tournament and advance directly to the semifinals. The third and fourth place teams host the fifth and sixth place teams in the quarterfinal round Nov. 1, and the winners go on to the semifinals. This year's MVC Tournament takes place Nov. 6 and 8 at Omaha, Neb.
Evansville steps out of MVC play for its next two matches, Thursday at Purdue and Sunday at Murray State.
