University of Evansville senior-to-be first baseman Derek Melton (Trenton, Ohio/Edgewood) has been named to the Northwoods League All-Star Game, after producing one of the best offensive first halves in the prestigious wooden-bat summer league this season.
Melton currently ranks among the Northwoods League leaders in four different offensive categories, including leading the league in RBI with 34. Melton also ranks third in the league in batting average (.357), total hits (46), and on-base percentage (.462), while ranking just outside of the Northwoods League’s top five in home runs with four this season for the La Crosse Loggers. Melton’s bat in the middle of the Loggers’ order has helped La Crosse to a 21-14 overall record this summer, and a ranking of 14th nationally in Perfect Game Crosschecker’s Summer 16 rankings of the nation’s best summer league teams.
For Melton, it marks the second-straight year in which he has earned summer league all-star status, as he was named to the Central Illinois Collegiate League All-Star team last summer. This past spring at Evansville, Melton earned honorable mention all-Missouri Valley Conference honors for the Purple Aces at designated hitter, as he hit .287 with a team-leading five home runs and 25 RBI in his first season at UE. Melton began his college career at Wabash Valley Community College.
The Northwoods League All-Star Game will take place on Monday, July 14 at 7:05 p.m. at Warner Park in Madison, Wisconsin, and can be seen live across the country on ESPNU.
