Weir's Rangers Fall 2-0 In UEFA Final
MANCHESTER, England – The Glasgow Rangers' attempt to win their first UEFA Cup championship since 1972 fell short here tonight for former University of Evansville All-American David Weir. FC Zenit St. Petersburg scored in the 72nd minute and again in the final moments of added time to beat Weir and the Rangers 2-0 in the UEFA Cup championship at sold-out City of Manchester Stadium. Still, it was a great run for the Rangers, a unit that went from unheralded earlier in the season to among the best in Europe in April and May. One of the main reasons for the Rangers' success was the leadership on defense shown by Weir. The native of Scotland led the University of Evansville to a number one national ranking in 1990, when he scored 24 goals and made 11 assists for 59 points, the second highest total in Aces' history. Weir was the first American collegiate player to compete for a European team in the World Cup when he made Scotland's team in 1997.
