Former University of Evansville goalkeeper Troy Perkins got the shutout and the U.S. National Team routed Grenada 4-0 Saturday night as it opened its title defense in the regional championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean, the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Freddy Adu, Stuart Holden, Robbie Rogers and Charlie Davies scored for the U.S. Rogers also had two assists. The 12th ranked U.S. side, seeking its third straight Gold Cup title, outshot No. 88 Grenada 25-3. Coming off a second place finish in the FIFA Confederations Cup, the U.S. used one of its youngest lineups in recent memory. It was Perkins' second appearance with the national team.
Group play continues Wednesday with the U.S. hosting Honduras in Washington, D.C., followed by a match against Haiti on Saturday.
After an outstanding 2003 season at the University of Evansville, Perkins played for D.C. United and was named the 2006 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. The Worthington, Ohio native is now with Vaaleranga of the Norwegian Premier League. Perkins is one of three keepers on the U.S. Gold Cup squad.
