It’s a pretty simple scenario for the University of Evansville women's soccer team Thursday night when the Aces (5-11-0, 2-3-0) host Creighton (10-5-2, 2-2-1) in the final match of the regular season at Black Beauty Field at 7:00.
Win, and they come back to Black Beauty Field Sunday afternoon for a 1:00 match in the quarterfinal round of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament against Creighton, Drake or Indiana State. Lose or tie, and they hit the road. The quarterfinal matches pair up the #3 seed against #6, and #4 against #5. The 3-6 winner goes up against the second place finisher in the semifinals at Omaha, Nebraska on Friday, November 6. The 4-5 winner takes on regular season champ Illinois State in the other semifinal match. The championship is Sunday, November 8 in Omaha at 1:00, with an NCAA Tournament berth on the line. Tourney pairings will be sorted out by Thursday night since all six teams that have qualified for the tournament play each other Thursday to finish the regular season.
The Evansville-Creighton series has been one of the most competitive in the MVC in recent years. UE has won three of the last four, but Creighton has a 4-3-1 edge in the last eight meetings, dating back to 2004. In those eight games, Creighton has a narrow 14-12 scoring edge over UE.
