EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Lipscomb catcher Caleb Joseph went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI Wednesday night to help power the visiting Lipscomb Bisons baseball team past the University of Evansville Purple Aces by a score of 8-5 at Charles H. Braun Stadium in Evansville.

Joseph ignited a four-run third-inning rally against UE starter Sean McCarthy (0-3) with a long two-run home run to left-center field to help break open a 3-2 contest. The Bisons would tack on two more unearned runs in the frame against the Purple Aces to grab a 7-2 lead going to the bottom of the third.

Evansville would tack on single runs in the third and fourth inning against Lipscomb starter Dylan Ray on an RBI double by freshman Brian Robinson and an RBI single by sophomore Andy Pascoe, but reliever Paul Piennette (1-0) would come on to quiet the UE bats with 2.2 innings of one-hit scoreless relief to keep the score 7-4 in favor of Lipscomb.

The Bisons would tack on another run on an RBI single by Joseph in the sixth inning to push the lead to 8-4. Evansville would respond with a run of its own in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 8-5 on an RBI single by Pascoe, but Lipscomb reliever Chris Burnett would come out of the bullpen and work out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth and a lead-off base runner in the ninth to record a save for Lipscomb.

Joseph keyed Lipscomb’s attack at the top of the order, going 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI out of the third spot in the lineup, while third baseman Branden Cadavid went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the No. 8 hole. Robinson led Evansville with three hits, including an RBI double, while Pascoe and freshmen outfielder Nate Smith and Greg Wallace all had two hits apiece.

With the victory, Lipscomb improves to 5-7 on the year. Evansville, meanwhile, slips to 1-12 on the season. The Purple Aces will return to Charles H. Braun Stadium on Friday as UE will welcome Cleveland State, North Dakota State, and Central Michigan to town for the annual Dunn Hospitality Diamond Classic. The first game each day will begin at 11 a.m., with UE playing at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
